When it comes to music in Kumamoto, “Good Time Charlie” deserves to lead the list!
This live country music spot is run by Charlie Nagatani, 83, who has been the organizer for the Annual Country Gold Music Festival at ASPECTA in Minami-Aso Village since 1989.



１９８９年より毎年１０月第３日曜日「約束の日」に「カントリーゴールド」を主催してきたチャーリー永谷さんのお店が、

熊本市銀座通りにある「グッド・タイム・チャーリー」。
His first exposure to country music was on his 20th birthday. One of his friends surprised him with a country band performance, and Charlie fell in love with the music! He dropped out of college and headed to the Iwakuni Marine Corps Air Station.
２０歳の誕生日にカントリーバンドの演奏を贈られて以来、このジャンルに魅了されたチャーリーさんが１９７６年にオープン。

現在、全米３３州から名誉州民の称号を得、熊本県民賞のみならず、日米協会からも、日米の文化交流への貢献を称えられるチャーリーさん！Good Time Charlie はそのチャーリーさんのバンド、キャノンボールの演奏を、毎晩楽しむことができるスポットです！


Charlie put together a band which performed for military personnel going to Viet Nam. This continued until until the end of the war. In 1976 he opened his club “Good Time Charlie” in Kumamoto City.
His 63-year contribution as a bridge between the US and Japan through country music has made him a legendary icon in Japan.
Charlie’s many honors include receiving the Mansfield Award (Mike Mansfield, American statesman) in 1989 for his grassroots cultural exchanges, the Jim Reeves Award, the Kumamoto Prefectural Award in 2005, and the Japan-America Society Kaneko Award in 2019.
Charlie is a frequent performer at the Grand Ole Opry and an honorary citizen of 33 US states!
