Reigan-do Cave is where the great swordsman Miyamoto Musashi spent about a year writing his famous “Book of Five Rings.”
Being in the cave and touching the rock that Musashi might have sat upon, you can imagine how he looked back on his life while putting his swordsmanship into a book.
After entering the gate, on the way to the cave, you are welcomed by five-hundred Buddha figures sculpted from stone. They were commissioned by a devout merchant in the Edo period. It took 24 years to complete. It is said that you can find one that looks like you or a family member among them! Hope you can find one of yourself!
Taxi Service to Visit Musashi-related Sites!
People often say that it is difficult to visit places related to MIYAMOTO Musashi (Reigan-do Cave, Shimada Museum of Arts, and Musashi-zuka Park).
Well, now there is a quite reasonable taxi service to visit 3 places: ¥9,000/taxi ride for about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
If you are a party of four, it is only ¥2,250 per person.
Does it still sound expensive? When you know how far these places are from each other, and that the fare includes admission fees, this is actually a GREAT deal! The taxi picks you up at Kumamoto Station or Josai-en, and drops you off at either of these two places.
For reservations: call 096-322-5060 (Josai-en 9 AM – 5:30 PM), or 096-327-9500 (Information at Kumamoto Station 8:30 AM – 7 PM)
*This service is called “Kotchan Taxi (こっちゃんタクシー)”.
